'Is it a job? A career? A calling?' How you treat your work matters, motivational speaker says

You go to work every single day on weekdays. You wake up early in the morning, brave the traffic, spend so much time in the workplace, work overtime, go home late at night. But is it really worth it? Do you feel complete? Despite the stress and all, does it give you a rewarding feeling at the end of the day?

Motivational speaker Jayson Lo, the best-selling author of YOUnique “Understanding Others by Understanding YOU” and YOUnique Youth, said there are three types of people who go to work: those who treat their work as a job, those who treat their work as a career, and those people who treat their work as a calling. And the way a person treats his job truly matters.

“‘Yong job, anong mayro’n diyan? 15-30. Papasok tayo, may suweldo. Siyempre kailangan natin ‘yan. Pero kung ‘yon lang ‘yong reason kaya tayo pumapasok, ang mangyayari sa atin, wala tayong amp, wala tayong power pagdating sa trabaho natin. Pangalawa, career. Usong-uso ‘yan sa mga millennial. They will use their current work as a launching pad to other careers,” he said in his speech.

[What’s in a job? 15-30. We go to work and get paid. Of course, we need that. But if that’s the only reason why we go to work, we have no amp, we have no power. Second, career. A lot of millennials do that. They will use their current work as a launching pad to other careers.]

But the third one, he stressed, is the most important of all.

“Ang pangatlo ang pinaka-importante, calling. Na kahit anong trabaho natin, anong profession natin, we can turn our work into a calling. What’s a calling? It’s something that is significant to the lives of others,” he noted.

[The third, the most important of all, is calling. No matter what our job is, no matter what our profession it, we can turn our work into a calling.]
