Senior citizen sells lugaw for P2 amid soaring prices to help the needy

A senior citizen in Valenzuela City touched the hearts of netizens after deciding to sell lugaw for only P2 in order to help the needy despite being affected by the increasing commodity costs himself.

Vlogger Manuel Olazo featured Mang Romy’s stall on his Facebook page. Asked why he is selling lugaw for only P2, the lugaw vendor said he wants to help parents not earning enough to feed all their children.

“Halimbawa, may pamilya, lima anak. Lima anak mo. Kaya mo bang bigyan ng tig-P50 yung mga anak mo?” 77-year-old Mang Romy said.

Aside from this, Mang Romy is also aware that workers’ minimum salary is barely enough to cover for all their needs. “Magkano sahod ng isang ordinaryong tao? Magkano sahod ng minimum? P500, almost P600. Meron pang hindi sumasahod ng minimum.”

Asked if he still makes money on selling lugaw, he answered: “Hindi kumikita. Natatalo. Mahal ang kerosene eh. Kerosene ko isang libo.”

However, Mang Romy said he is earning from other items like tokwa’t baboy.

“Hindi naman lahat ng kakain sa akin puro bata. Pag kumain ka sa akin ng halimbawa, tokwa’t baboy, kumikita na ako roon… Kung bata lang, talagang lugaw lang,” he said.

The video has gained more than 56k reactions and 8.5k shares as of this writing, with netizens praising Mang Romy for his kind heart.

“Mabuhay po kayo, MANG Rommy… Sana’y marami pong tumulad sa inyong mabuting kalooban… Diyos na po ang bahala sa pagpapala sa inyo… At tanggapin n’yo po ang aking paghanga at kasiyahan sa inyong mabuting kalooban salamat po. God bless PILIPINAS,” a Facebook user said.

“Love ko yan c mang Romy…natulungan niya un maraming anak…kc wala budget…para sa pagkain ng mga bata..lugaw is the best ni mang romy!” I. Alvarez commented.

Meanwhile, the uploader called on netizens to support Mang Romy’s business.
