Bridge under construction in Davao City collapses; at least two workers injured

A concrete bridge currently under construction in Davao City has reportedly collapsed on Friday morning, February 18.

The bridge is located in Sitio Kulafu, Brgy. Magsaysay, Marilog District and is being constructed by Monolithic Construction and Concrete Products Inc., (MCCPI) Construction.

Pictures of the collapsed concrete structure showing bended steel bars and broken formworks were uploaded on the Facebook page Team Davao Rescue.

According to the project engineer, they were filling the bridge with fresh concrete when the structure suddenly collapsed past 8 am on Friday.

At least two workers were injured in the incident although this has yet to be verified.

An officer of DPWH-Davao Public Affairs and Information Officer, Dean Ortiz,  told MindaNews they are currently investigating the reason behind the collapse.

The Kulafu River Bridge project is a component of flood control project in the city and has an estimated cost P93.7 million.

The construction began in 2020 but since the project is still unfinished, the contractor may be held responsible for rebuilding it with no additional cost to the government, the DPWH said.

It was scheduled to be completed in the second week of March this year but a delay in the completion target is expected due to the collapse.

Meanwhile, the injured workers were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The contractor also promised to provide assistance to the affected workers.
