A Russian soldier who surrendered gets an unlikely welcome from her Ukrainian captors – with food and drinks.
A video of this heartwarming scene amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine has been circulating on social media recently and touched the hearts of many netizens. It even offers a glimmer of hope to some who denounce war.
In the video, the unidentified Russian soldier can be seen being surrounded by a crowd of Ukrainians, with some offering him food while he drinks from a cup.
Another woman can also be seen holding a phone, presumably while contacting the soldier’s mother in Russia.
When the call finally came through, the soldier broke down in tears. He seemed to be unable to say something but keeps on nodding as if in agreement to what he’s heard.
The incident reportedly took place in Novy Bug on Wednesday, March 02.

Netizens who’ve watched the video praise the Ukrainians for their compassion and humanity even in times of aggression.
“The humanity of the Ukrainian people is immense. The world could use far more people like them. Thank you for sharing this video. And that poor boy was apparently so thirsty and hungry unlike most of us just wanted to talk to his parent,” one commenter said.
“So beautiful to see these wonderful people have not lost their humanity. God bless them and the young soldier,” a netizen added.
The way the soldier feasted on his tea and pastries, some opined, showed that he may have not eaten for days.
